Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Parental Supervision of a Minor
My seventeen year old daughter wants to go on vacation with her friends with no adult supervision. I've told her that I won't let her go because should something happen to her, I could be charged with child neglect or some such thing. She doesn't believe me. What laws can prove to her that I'm responsible for her and I could be in trouble if I let her go? The age of majority in my state is 18.

Re: Parental Supervision of a Minor
It would be virtually impossible for any child neglect charge to be brought against you from your giving approval to your daughter to go on vacation with her friends and without adult supervision.( I haven't the space here to explain why this is true for this particular situation.)
Only if your daughter were to commit willful and deliberate torts(civil wrongs) against the person and/or property of another is it conceivable that you could incur legal liability for her actions
while she's vacationing with friends.(Parents can
be held responsible for these kinds of acts committed by their children).
However, none of the above should necessarily be determinative as to whether you should allow your daughter to go on this vacation. You may have other valid reasons as to why you don't wish her to go but your concern about incurring a charge for child neglect should not be one of these reasons.
