Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Parenting Class?

My ex has filed contempt charges against me along with a motion to change our current custody/visitation orders. The judge signed a paper saying that we are ordered to take a parenting class, but then it says my ex is exempt from taking a class because they live out of state. Is this fair that I have to take it and they dont just because they live in another state. Also what happens if I am unable to do the class before the deadline that is given. Can I be granted extra time or will I get in trouble for it.

Re: Parenting Class?

It may not be fair but the court likely does not have the required personal jurisdiction over the out of state party to order them to take the parenting class. And, yes, you should be able to file a motion with the court to grant you extra time to complete the class, if such is needed.
