Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Can my partner make medical descisions on my behalf?

I have been living with my boyfriend for 6 years and was wondering if in an emergency situation he would be able to make decisions on my behalf? Do we need to file for a power of attorney? What if something happens in the mean time?

I have a child which is not his, what if something were to happen to both of us, could he act on my child's behalf as well?

How will the recent vote on Ballot question #1 affect us?

Your boyfriend is not legally authorized to make medical decisions on your behalf. You will need to execute a document called an "advance medical directive" to allow him this authority.

It doesn't take long, and forms are available on the internet.

Without legal custody or guardianship, he cannot make decisions on your child's behalf. Depending on your situation, the child's other parent can allow this authority.

Not sure how to answer your last question without more details.
