Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Paying child support

I have a general contract stating joint custody with the father having physical custody of the child and giving me visitation rights. This is the only information on this contract. We did not see a judge either, this was done in front of a court lawyer. Is it assumed that I pay child support or should it have been written in this contract, therefore making a need to amend it?

Re: Paying child support

The arrangements for support of minor children by parents must conform the the courts minimum requirements irrespective of what the parents may have signed off. Of course, the dollar amounts to be paidwill vary with the circumstances.

Re: Paying child support

It's not clear from your question whether your "general contract" has actually been formalized as a binding order of the court.

However, even if was not, it should've included

a provision for child support in accordance with the state child support guidelines.

And yes, it is generally presumed that the noncustodial parent will pay a defined monetary

amount of child support each and every month.

(Milk and pampers or other types of so-called in-kind contributions will not suffice.)
