Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Property Question

My husband's father gave me a gift to cover closing costs on a home we purchased. The loan is in my name. Would my husband be able to claim ownership since his father gave the money to me as a gift? I have a letter, from his father, stating that it was a gift to me. It is included in my mortgage paperwork.

Re: Property Question

No, in Virginia money given as a gift should remain the property of the giftee if the latter has safeguarded from having it comingled with or converted to marital property shared by a spouse.
