Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My question is what should i do if i left my then 5year old daughter in the hands of her paternal grandmother who lives in Maryland, and I live in VA, with no signed agreement to transfer custody to the grandmother, and when i asked to have my child returned to me, the grandmother denies? I called the police, and they stated that i must file for Temporary Custody of my child, is that true?

Rather than involving the courts of Maryland or Virginia in this matter,

which could be an extended process, it would likely be preferable

to devise a way of simply retrieving the child from this grandmother's possession and returning her to your custody without all the time and expense that would likely accompany the path of litigation should you follow the advice of the cops.

Afterall, as the natural mother of this child, the law already recognizes you

as the natural custodian of her in the absence of any valid court order(s)

which say otherwise.
