Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

would there be record of a divorce if there was a public notice divorce and one party was not aware or couldn't be found. I was told my fiancee was divorced by a custody lawyer in court but we have been unsuccessful at finding the paperwork so we can have it to get nmarried. And the lawyer that said it was not ours so she will not provide us with any information and it wasn't in the courts documents.

At least the lawyer should tell you what court the case was heard; then you could go to that court and get a certified copy of the final divorce.
