Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I am currently seeking a divorce in VA and I know I have to wait 12 months due to minor children before I can file. We have agreed on custody and support for the children. Currently I am paying out $1650 twice a month which has left me almost broke. The question I have is should I stop paying support until a court ordered amount it determined and should I get a lawyer or is it better to continue to pay?
