Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

seperating financial ties from hubby

Hi,

Been married 30+ years to a manic depressive husband. When he gets manic, he has spent SCADS of money and it has gotten us in a financial pickle more times than I care to remember. I don't work outside the home and I'm petrified he could get US into DEEP financial debt or worse. Is there any way you know to protect or seperate myself financially and keep our home safe from his potentially disasterous spending, short of a divorce? He has agreed to get rid of the home equity line of credit...guess that's a start. I am at the end of my rope but not QUITE ready to jump ship.

THANKS for any help you may offer!

Natalie

Re: seperating financial ties from hubby

You should hold title with your husband to your home by what the law calls "TENANTS BY THE ENTIRETIES" in order to protect the house from levy by creditors. If you are unsure as to whether this is the case, take the matter to a local attorney to make this determination for you.
