Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Seperation

In the state of VA, when a child is involved, a couple wishing to divorce must be seperated for a year. Now due to the fact that a child is involved, what happens when both parents wish to be somewhere for the sake of the child. (Birthdays, hospital visits...) Does the seperation only have to do with romantic seperation? Or totally?
