Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I have a show cause for child support. I have an order from 18yrs ago. Will I be given a chance to start to make payments or will I go staight to jail.

No, the court will give you a reasonable opportunity to pay the accrued arrearages.

The court will usually prefer that you make payments rather than sit in jail. Most likely the court will work something out with you. Just make reasonable payments and do not give too many excuses. Sometimes the judges will order you to jail with work release. Do what you can to maintain a job and show good faith. You should hire an attorney.
