I am a Japanese citizen who lives in Virginia, my husband is an American, also a resident of Virginia. It seems no problem to divorce at a ward office FOR ME, but is it valid for my husband? We married in Japan, he didn't get marriage license from VA court system when he married to me. All document we have to show that we are married is marriage certificate issued by Japanese ward office.

I contacted one attorney, but she doesn't know the difference between "ward office divorce" and "family court divorce" in Japan. She said she cannot tell me because she doesn't know Japanese law but divorcing in Japan is valid in Virginia. And US embassy or Japanese law tell me that it is depends on the state if "ward office divorce" is valid.

Thank you very much for your answer in advance.

You (as well as others you've contacted regarding the issue) may have made it

unnecessarily complicated, i.e., if your Japanese divorce was done in full conformance with the divorce laws of Japan, then it should be recognized here in the U.S. as valid for the parties involved(which would include your husband).
