Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Stay at home mom needs help

My husband and I have been married for 17 years. For the past 8, I have been a stay at home mom taking care of our 3 children. There has been a lot of verbal abuse over the years and I would like to get a separation, however, I do not have an income. I have been trying to find a job, but finding something I can support 3 children on is proving more difficult than I imagined. My husband knows of my wishes and is protesting loudly. I want out, but I don't know where to turn to next. I have no family in the area to stay with, so that's not an option for me. Aren't there agencies out there to help women like me? Please provide any advice you can. Thank you for your help.

Re: Stay at home mom needs help

Yes, you could contact one of the low or no cost legal services providers in your area to see whether you might qualify for one of their attorneys to assist you with your present situation.

A complaint for so-called pendente lite(temporary) support and maintenance for you and your children could be filed in your local circuit court which would likely also include an order that your husband vacate the home and allow it to be maintained as a residence for you and your children until there can be a final settlement or adjudication of all matters related to the dissolution of the marriage.
