Why was I subpoenaed as a witness instead of the defendant to a assult & battery hearing in Virginia? Was this a mistake?

Why would a defendant charged in a criminal case be subject to a subpoena as a witness in the case?

Makes no sense at all; you would seem well advised to contact the clerk of the court responsible

for the issuance of this subpoena to help clear up your confusion in this matter.
