does the defendent have to be present in all divorce procedings?

Depends upon the nature of the proceedings. If it's a no fault type

of divorce proceeding wherein the defendant has been properly served with papers and personally waived his or her rights to contest or appear, the answer is obviously no, he or she does not have to be present for any of these types of proceedings.
