Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

understanding alimony

my adjusted gross income is $51k annually. I have assumed all of the marital debt (taxes, credit cards ect)that totals aproximately $15K. I have to pay $1100 in child support. My ex-wife has possession of marital home & does not/has not worked in the 10 years.she says her financial need is $3565.00 per month. 1)how much of that am I legally responsible for? 2)from your experience what do you consider a ''reasonable'' amount of alimony?

Re: understanding alimony

Believe it or not "reasonable" is whatever the judge defines "reasonable" to be. There is no clear way of giving you an answer to your question. You say that you are paying child support of X amount. Is that court ordered? She has the house, is that also court ordered? Alimony payments will affect child support payments so you really do need to consult with an attorney. An attorney will ask several questions to determine whether alimony is likely to be granted by a court. If you have any questions please call me at 301-652-0663 or 703-968-3974.

Re: understanding alimony

There are guidelines for calculating spousal support, at least on a temporary or "pendente lite" basis, and many judges in Virginia, including here in Virginia Beach, like to use them.

You should contact a divorce lawyer in your city/county and discuss all the varied factors in your own case. Then he or she will be able to at least hazard a reasonable guess.
