Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Re: unmarried couple's break-up

Hello,

My boyfriend and I have been living together for 12 years. We bought a house together as joint tenants in North Carolina. He was supposed to move up to Virginia, but he is currently having an affair. He threatened me to stop coming by the house last night. We have paid mortgage together by doing small business together. Can he make me stop coming by the house? I'd like to sell the house and share the profit. Thanks.

Yes, if your name is on the deed as a co-owner of

this house, you have as much right to enter it and occupy it as your boyfriend. And, if such is the case, you also have the right to force its sale in

what is called a partition suit. (A North Carolina attorney who handles real property law matters could further explain this to you.)
