Re: Family Medical Leave Act

An employee is entitled to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in any 12 month period for reasons of either personal illness(serious health condition) or illness of immediate family members or for leave necessary to accommodate the birth and care of a newborn child or to accommodate the placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care. The employee, to be eligible for this leave, must have worked for the employer for at least 12 months(preceding the request) and have accumulated 1250 hours of such work time in that previous 12 month period.

The employer, to be covered by this federal law, must have at least 50 or more employees, working within a radius of 75 miles in the state, territory, or possession where it is conducting its business. (This requirement applies only to private employers as all state. local, and federal employers are automatically covered irrespective of size.)
