If I was on medical leave through a certain date but then made the decision not to return to work a week before the return date, does the employer have the right to terminate my employment then or am I covered through my leave?

If the employer reasonably interpreted your decision not to return to work one week before you were due to return as advance notice of your decision to quit your job, then, yes, the employer was free to terminate you as he saw fit unless you were working under a contract of employment which provided for otherwise.
