Legal Question in Medical Leave in Virginia

FMLA/Maternity leave

friend is a teacher... off from school in summer,, baby due early July.She wants to be able to maximize her time home with baby. School starts again in August. Can she take her 6 week ''maternity leave'' when school starts and then the FMLA afterwards..or does the ''maternity leave ''start when baby is born {even though she's not in school} and then FMLA.. or she doesnt get maternity leave since its summer?.... sounds confusing...what is best to do and how does she do it.. Thank you for your help.

Only the school could answer your questions regarding your friend's maternity leave. The FMLA leave would be separate and apart and although such leave is provided to accommodate the birth of a child, whether the school would allow their local maternity leave to be used in conjunction with the federal FMLA leave would be a policy decision for them(school authorities) to determine.
