Legal Question in Medical Leave in Virginia

maternity leave

I had a contract for 8/06-6/07 with my school. I went on maternity leave May 07 and during that time my principal filled my position without asking me about returning following school year. Is that legal?

Unless your contract of employment guaranteed you a right of first refusal or something similar, the school apparently was under no obligation to renew your contract for the coming school year and

apparently opted not to do so.
