Legal Question in Medical Leave in Virginia
Maternity leave and short/long term disability
I work for an employer in Northern Viriginia, but leave in Maryland. I am on maternity leave, and I have been trying to find out from my employer if short/long term disability would cover part of my leave with some pay. My employer tells that if I quit, they will give me the package that expplains if I am elligible for it.

Your employer doesn't appear to be very anxious to retain your services.(The refusal to share this information with you only upon your quitting your position is absurd.)
FMLA leave is unpaid leave and may be taken by an employee working for an employer covered by the Act for up to 12 months for the family-related conditions/situations permitted under the Act and which include the birth of a child.
Re: Maternity leave and short/long term disability
Correction to previous answer: FMLA leave may be taken by a covered and eligible employee for up to 12 WEEKS in any 12 month period and not for 12 months, obviously, as erroneously indicated.
You can directly contact the Commonwealth's Short Term Disability insurance provider known as Unum-Provident and upon request they will send you all the information regarding your claim for short term disability payments based upon your pregnancy and the forms with instructions on how to apply for it.
There is an 800 number available to call this insurance carrier but this forum does not allow for phone numbers so I cannot provide it in this response.
