Legal Question in Medical Leave in Virginia

tape recording any meetings with superintendent and administrator

I have requested to have a meeting with my assistant principal and superintendent this Monday regarding issues which involve FMLA, My evaluation as a teacher and the like. May I tape the meeting as docmentation or is that not legal?

Virginia is a so-called "one party state" when it comes to the consent(s) required to tape telephone or other conversations, meaning that only one of the of the parties involved in the conversation needs to consent(which may also be the taper). (However, as a courtesy to your employer---and to avoid possible repercussions--you may still wish to obtain their permission to do the taping.)
