Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia
I'm getting used for 6k, their was no written contract. Does this person have a case?
In Sept 13' I was asked to watch a puppy for 6 months to a year. This persons name is Sanjay. He offered me 13k. At that time we were unable to keep the dog, but allowed me to find someone to watch after the dog. The dog was given to a friend (Megan) Sept 13' until Dec 24th 2013. We gave Megan 7k out of the 13k we were given. In Dec Megan was unable to care for the dog and I had to find someone else to watch the dog. An aquaitence of mine (Natalie) agreed to $3500 for the remainder of the time. Please note that Sanjay was aware and completely fine with all of this. I was out of contact with both Sanjay and Natalie for the remainder of the time until I rec'd a phone call from Sanjay saying that Natalie won't give the dog back. Sanjay took Natalie to court and demanded the dog back. He got the dog back and I then rec'd a letter from his lawyer saying that he was going to sue me for the 6k because it took so long to get the dog back and all the legal fees he had to pay for.

No, probably not if you can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that Sanjay was in
complete agreement with your "farming this dog out", so to speak, to Natalie for the rest of the term of the contract who apparently would be the more appropriate defendant for Sanjay to sue rather than you (in my opinion).
(I might add, however, that what happened with Natalie in regard to this dog was quite predictable
and an inherent risk with this kind of arrangement which you apparently failed to realize.)
