bad check ginen to me

I am in the entertainment industry . i recently was tipped with a 4,000 $ check . the check obviously did not cash . When i returned to compain about the check the man became rude and aggressive . He told me i stole the check and demanded it back in return for cash in the amount of 1000$ . I photo copied the check and met him at the bank where he treated me again saying i things that put me in fear of my saftey . i did not want to return the check at all and fight it out in court . But i needed the money did to the fact that i owed the company money for the booking .
