Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Boyfriend owes me Money

My boyfriend owes me @ $5,000. I have everything itemized on a spreadsheet which he has signed. Will this signed spreadsheet hold up in court? If not, what should I do?

The issue you're presented with is called "statute of frauds". That means that you have to have a signed document in order to successfully prosecute a claim. The document has to be signed by the person whom you wish to hold liable, and must reasonably identify the subject matter of the agreement. If the spreadsheet includes something to indicate that he's borrowing the money and not just certifying the accuracy of the data, I'd say that's enough. Otherwise, it's a matter for argument, but the paper's better than nothing. Btw, the information doesn't have to all be in one piece of paper - if you have email from the debtor, for example, you can put that together with the spreadsheet to show that he has acknowledged the debt.

Must not be much of a boyfriend if you're thinking about how to sue him.
