Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia
Civil Remedies for Criminal Practices Act, Florida Statutes 772.11
I was recently in Miami, FL Memorial Day weekend 2007 when I was accused of stealing a tube of sunscreen totaling $6.99 from Publix. No arrest was made, however they made me sign a series of paperwork (which included a copy of my drivers license/social security number) and when asked declined to provide me w/copies. Made me feel uncomfortable especially w/identity theft being so rapid these days. I received a claim letter that asks to settle for $100.00. If I decide to settle, will this be on my criminal record? If so for how long? Should I settle and if I do should I ask for the orginal copies of the paperwork I signed. Do I have that right? Please let me know. Thank you.

A Florida attorney familiar with Florida criminal law should address this question. Nevertheless, my sense is that you've been given some kind of deferred disposition but which, unfortunately, for you will nonetheless still result in some kind of record of the offense.
