Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

crimes against property

My 15 yr old son slept over at a new friends house while the parents were out of town. Other teenagers from a neighboring high school showed up with beer, marajuana, and trashed their house. (As per the officer involved) my son went upstairs and fell asleep in a closet (to avoid getting in trouble). The parents now say I am responsible for some of the damage, and need to pay them. Am I?

Re: crimes against property

As with any legal case, there must be evidence, evidence which in this case which would prove by a preponderance of the evidence

that your son willfully and deliberately participated in the destruction of the property.

Your son's mere sleeping upstairs does not constitute such proof.

You should refuse to pay.
