Lawyer contacted my family

I have an unpaied dept with my college (not a loan)and they have hired a lawyer who called my home. Is it illegal for a lawyer to call my mother, tell her about the debt, question her, and threaten to call my dad? I am 24 live at home and not listed as dependent.

May not be legal if lawyer is subject to Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

He certainly cannot do it after you tell him not to contact you at home. I think it probably is abusive for him to do that. But the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act prohibits all of these things AFTER you tell them not to do it.
