Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

I live in Virginia and my hours have been cut and I am unable to pay my rent. I recieved a summons for unlawful detainer. I will be starting another job in a week, but I will not be paid in time to pay back rent. What is a good reason for a continuance? Can I talk to the lawyer for a contiunance? What do I do? I am not some deadbeat that does not want to pay rent, I love my apartment,I have lived there for eight years. Help me !!

Yes, you could talk to the landlord's lawyer not only about a continuance,

but, perhaps, about a way to settle the case so that no hearing on the matter

would be necessary.
