Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

I live in Virginia, last year my wife and I allowed my adult step daughter come live with us while she tried to get back on her feet. There is no lease, she pays no rent and does not contribute to the household expenses. Do I have to legally evict her or can I just make her leave

You must legally evict her by following the legal protocols required of a landlord

who wishes to evict a noncompliant tenant from his or her property.

You would be well advised to forget all about whatever self help remedies you may have in mind of "just making her leave".
