Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Non members attending a club meeting

I would like to know what rights I have to eject non members showing up for a private car club meeting. A couple of members have been banned from the club due to problems they caused. What legal rights do I have as the founder and director of the club? Can I have the authorities remove them or do I have to do this myself? The meeting is held in a public restaurant in a room by ourselves. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Re: Non members attending a club meeting

You have a few options. One is to call the police and when they arrive, identify yourself as the club leader. They would probably assist you in ejecting the nonmembers. Another option would be to obtain a protective order or restraining order if there has been any threat of violence.

Re: Non members attending a club meeting

I would not advise involving the police nor attempting self help at ejecting these persona non gratis. You would be better advised to inform the restaurant manger well in advance of your meeting of these possible unwelcome attendees and then follow his or her suggestions as to an appropriate course of action which might be utilized to exclude them with minimal disturbance.

If the restaurant manager has no credible suggestions nor advice in this regard, you may need to consider changing venues for your meetings to another place where the manager may have the willingness and least restrictive means to exclude these unwelcome attendees from your gatherings.

Re: Non members attending a club meeting

Correction to previous answer: Personae non grata is the correct term rather than persona non gratis.
