Obtaining a Reward from another State
When I was a child I won a civil suit against a man who assaulted me. At the time I was awarded $75,000 but he was living with his mother at the time and not earning wages, therefore I could not collect on it. I am now 20 years old and my family has since moved to Florida. How could I go about obtaining the money that was rewarded to me approx. 10 years ago?

If it was a Florida judgment and you properly recorded and rerecorded the judgment, then it may still be a lien. Florida Statutes 55.081 limits the time of a judgment lien on either personal or real property to 20 years maximum, but it has to be properly rerecorded as each recordation is good for ten years unless entered before 1994, then for 7 years. If it was an out of state judgment, it had to then be properly registered in Florida, at which time the above time periods would probably apply as well.

Your attorney in the litigation should have recorded the judgment for you and explained how you need to renew it or you will lose the right to collect on it. Check with that attorney and find out what was done, if you don't know. The law does not favor people who wait too long to take action, so don't wait around. Retain an attorney to go over your facts because you can't handle this matter yourself.
