Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia
Philanthropy
I paid $800 to a person for bookkeeping services and the softball league is stating that all work should be on a volunteer basis. I did not have time to do the bookkeeping as league President of the softball league (a non-profit organization) and the books were a mess so I paid someone to do it. Now they want the lady to reimburse the $800 or they will take her to court.

Re: Philanthropy
This is obviously a follow-up to your previously-posted inquiry which had virtually no facts.
Spending $800 of the softball league's
money for bookkeeping services without first obtaining the league's approval seems at the very least improvident on your part (in my opinion, of course).
However, it would appear that they(the league) have focused on the wrong person in their litigious ponderings, meaning the lady who apparently performed the services which you requested, rather than you as the person who may have exceeded the proper bounds of your authority in contracting with her for these services.
Re: Philanthropy
I suggest that you consult the by-laws as to the duties and responsibilities you have as president. Also, in light of the potential for litigation--possibly directed at you as well--I advise that you consult an attorney to closely review your actions.
