Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Question regarding money owed

I made a stupid error and lent money to a friend in another state. He signed a contract stating that he would pay me back within a few weeks. That was in November. I have given him the option of paying me back in installments, but he has repaid nothing. I have the signed contract. Is there anything that I can do to recover the money?

You certainly can do something abput it. You can file a lawsuit against him in small claims/General Sessions Court in the county where you live. You can argue that the "contract for the loa" originated in your County and State. The problem you might have is serving him with personal notice of the lawsuit. You may have to get a private process server to serve him. But once he is served, you can get a judgment against for your money and that judgment against him will show up on his credit report.
