Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

I shared an apartment with a friend. We were both on the lease. Things did not work out and we both agreed that I could move out and they would pay the rent, utilities and any costs associated with moving out. I found out that this person was evicted a month after it occurred, and he left an unpaid balance of about $5200. The rental office knew I was no longer physically residing in the apartment. One month when he was late on the rent, they called me to let me know, yet I never heard about the eviction. Nevertheless, I know I am legally responsible to them for the unpaid balance and there is nothing I can do about the eviction being on my record. My question is, if I end up paying the unpaid balance to the rental company, can I sue my ex-roommate for the entire amount? And what if I cannot find him, am I totally screwed?
