Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

My wife and me bought my son a used truck in July. We paid 1900.00 down and own around 7000.00. Two days ago the differential went out which I understand things like that happen with a used vehicle. When we had it towed to the garage and the mechanic put it up on the rack he said the frame was almost rusted into and should have never been on the road. My issue is this dealership sold us a vehicle that placed my son at risk for serious injury or even death. I have not contacted the dealership yet because I'm not sure if they are legally liable.
