Legal Question in Immigration Law in Virginia
Adoption and Immigration
My 12 year old neice entered the US on tourist visa 2 years ago and we have since adopted her. We recently recieved the final court decree this month. Does she automatically become a legal resident/citizen as we both (myself&my spouse) are US citizens? or Do we have to file for immigration? If so, how long is the process?
Thanks

Re: Adoption and Immigration
Merely because you have now adopted your foreign born niece does not automatically confer upon her the status of citizenship.
You must now apply to the INS by filing the forms
required to adjust your newly adopted daughter's status in order to get her on track for citizenship. Officials from the INS will be able to advise you as to the likely time frames for this process.
