Legal Question in Immigration Law in Virginia
Apply for citizenship
I would like to apply for citizenship but I have late filed tax returnes and unpaid taxes. Can my citizenship be turned down because of this? Should I settle my taxes first?

Re: Apply for citizenship
Yes, it would likely be a good idea to take care of these unpaid taxes first before applying for citizenship, although it is unlikely that these would be a basis for denial.
Re: Apply for citizenship
You must settle any owed taxes prior to applying for citizenship. If you are on a payment plan, that may be acceptable, but if you have not paid your taxes, then you should do so prior to filing. Additionally, you may want to consult with an attorney to make sure there are no other eligibilty issues that may affect your application.
