Legal Question in Immigration Law in Virginia
Do I need I-551?
I have a current green card but have
applied to have it reissued in my
married name. I want to travel to
Europe to see my grandmother one
last time-it's a mater of urgency and
I cannot wait till the new card
arrives. My passport has my married
name; green card is in maiden name.
Can I travel if I take my marriage
certificate with me and the stamped
form I got 3 weeks ago when I had
my fingerprints re-taken? Or do I
need to get the I-5551 stamp?
Thank you!

Re: Do I need I-551?
You should be able to reenter the United States if you have your lawful permanent residence and a copy of your marriage certificate. It certainly would be safer to get your passport stamped while the new card is pending; see if you can do that. If not, then check with the port of entry to see if you will have any trouble reenterning the U.S. The other alternative is to proceed unless told otherwise. As long as you can prove you are the same person who has the lawful permanent resident, I don't foresee any major problem. Doesn't mean they won't stop you and question you, but if that is the only reason there is a discrepany in your application, a marriage certificate ought to hold some water! Good luck.
