Marrying a US Citizen

Hello,

I am in the F1 visa now(OPT) but it expires at the end of May. My boyfriend is a US Citizen, (he just went through the Naturalization process). We are thinking about getting married but not sure how long will it take to get my papers. Aso, since my OPT is to expire in May, what status would i be in if we marry in May?? WIll appreciate your help. Thanks

Once you get married, he can file for your permanent resident status. It generally takes around five months and depending on each individual case, it can be faster or slower.

Marrying him alone would not change your immigration status. He needs to actually file the application for you so that you can stay in the US waiting for the final adjudication.
