What is the difference between a non immigrant visa and a immigrant visa? Which one do you apply for if you want to be a permanent resident with a green card?

Re: permanent residence
The immigrant visa is the one you want if you want to become a lawful permanent resident("green card" holder) in the United States. Non-immigrant visas
are for those aliens who wish to visit the United States or reside here temporarily for various reasons but do not want to (or cannot)become permanent residents.
