Legal Question in Insurance Law in Virginia

Doctor bills 2 1/2 years after service

I just received a bill from my dentist for a date of service 2 yrs and 8 months ago. The bill was never submitted to my insurance company (they said they sent it and it must not have been received). It is 8 months too late to submit it to insurance. Can I be responsible for the amount when this is the first they have contacted me about it?

Re: Doctor bills 2 1/2 years after service

You, rather than your insurance carrier are primarily responsible for the payment of bills

for whatever services are supposed to be covered under the insurance. Therefore, you must pay the bill which so far remains unpaid.

You should, however, determine the date, if possible, when your dentitst submitted the matter

for payment and obtain a copy of this submission

(if one exists) and send it along to your insurance carrier to see if they will reimburse you. (It's quite possible that the negligence lies with the carrier who may have received the submission from your dentist but failed, for whatever reason, to act upon it.)
