Legal Question in Insurance Law in Virginia

Hail damage auto insurance claim (check payable to 2 parties, lien)

I recently had my car estimated for hail damage. The insurance company said that because of the $ amount of the damage and that I still owe $ on the car, that they are issuing me a check co-payable to me and the repair facility of my choice. They estimated me for a traditional repair but I want to do a paintless dent repair. I found a company who will do it for less than the insurance company's estimate. Is it legal to keep the $ left over? What are my rights? I've heard that the $ is owed to me by the insurance company regardless of whether I have the car repaired or not and that I have the right to do whatever I want with it. I AM still having the car repaired but for less $.

You can use the insurance carrier's check in any

manner you wish, whether for repairs to your hailed vehicle or for what some might consider less exemplary expenses such as those incurred with friends out for a "night on the town".
