Does bodily injury coverage cover the driver in a single car accident?

No. That's liability coverage. There is med pay coverage that will cover a small amount of medical bills. The uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage covers damages caused by hit and run vehicles or "phantom" vehicles that do not actually hit the victim but negligently cause the accident, but it's usually an uphill battle to convince the insurer or jury that this is what happened.
