Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Virginia
Copyright
I write music what do I need to do to protect it before I send it to anyone. Do i have to pay for a copyright for each song?I was told that if it was on paper or cd that it was already done and I can send it out is that true or is there more to it than that?

Re: Copyright
Under US copyright law, your work is under copyright protection the moment it is "created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device" In other words, once it saved in recorded or written form. There is no fee to pay to have your work protected. However if you want to sue someone for infringment of your work, you need to register your work in the US Copyright office, the current fee is 45.00 for each created work.
