Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

10% differential payment

At the beginning of the previous year, I received a promotion and moved from an off-shift position. This required my giving up a 10% shift differential, Several months later, I noticed that I was s till receiving this amount on my paycheck. My immediate superior (boss) told me that he felt I had earned this money and that while the differential would be removed going forward, I would be allowed to keep all past payments. When I received my next paycheck, I notied not only was I repaying this difference, but the company had decided on a payment plan without my knowledge or agreement that I feel is excessive. Two questions: 1) Am I required to repay this amount? 2) Can the company unilaterally decide on the amount and schedule of repayment without my permission? Thank you for you advice on this matter.
