Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
need advice
My wife, a manager, and two other associates were suspended from work by LP for what they are calling dishonesty, all in the same day. My wife has 6 years with the company and the other two are 7 and 2 years. LP did not show any proof of dishonesty nor do they have any. They have been suspended for 5 days so far and have not heard a word back. The company has no documentation of any dishonesty or any kind of negative documentation against them in there entire tenure. They have always had good inventory audits. When my wife filed police reports of theft for $500 and over $5,000 the company did absolutely nothing, not even a visit from LP to talk to the employees (not talking about the employees who were suspended, this was an incicdent involving other employees who are not with the company). What can we do? The employees at the store are telling us that my wife is no longer employed by the company when we call and ask to speak to her, is this ok even though she has not received termination? They have no basis to terminate and no paper work to back up. My wife is afraid it will be hard to find another job since they are her only workplace reference since this is her only employment since graduating college. Please advise.

Re: need advice
Your wife, accompanied by yourself or some other supportive person, should pay a personal visit to the store and ask to speak with her supervisor or other management personnel in order to ascertain her status.(Forget about phone calls, and do not go with any of the other suspended employees.)
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, private employers
can terminate employees at will with virtual impunity.
