Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Call Pay

My employer (rural hospital) requires some hourly, non-exempt employees to take call from home at night. Most of these employees live between 25 and 45 minutes away from the hospital. I have been told that these employees must now stay at a motel within 10 minutes of the hospital when they are on call. The motel fee is paid by the hospital. Some of them will have to pay babysitters or will have to bring their children with them. Can employees be made to stay in a hotel room away from home for $2 per hour call pay?

Re: Call Pay

Yes, very likely they can be required to do this unless the employees are working under a contract or collective bargaining type of agreement which would prohibit such a practice by the hospital.
