Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Case description: i requested a crew transfer due to unsafe working conditions. i was told the next day that i was laidoff. i applied for unemployment. they fought , saying i quit. i won. it was discovered by the unemployment officer that they had two conflicting statements on thier paperwork. one stated i quit the other, i was laid off. i feel the main reason i was terminated is due to the fact that i spoke up about the safety, or lack there of.
